Successful Outsourcing
When managed correctly outsourcing provides your organisation with the ability to leverage specialist skills which either do not exist or would be too expensive to have in-house. Outsourcing has the potential to save both time and money whilst delivering just in time skills when needed for your business.
The flip side of this of course is that if you fail to manage your outsorucing agreements correctly the results can be disastrous.
In recent years, many organisations in both public and private sectors have increased the use they make of outsourced services. The outsource services market is currently worth an estimated $65 billion per annum and increasing. A survey by KPMG three years ago suggested that more than 90% of organisations have experienced serious problems with outsourcing contracts. Research by Dunn & Bradstreet suggests that almost 25% of outsourcing contracts break down each year.
The outsourcing trend originated with ancillary services such as cleaning, catering, security and distribution, but has in more recent years included areas such as facilities management, HR, accounts payable, IT, procurement and even elements of core service delivery.
Outsourcing means that the organisation becomes increasingly dependent upon the outsource service providers. Surveys by a number of management consulting organisations, however, suggest that having outsourced important functions, many organisations fail to manage these service providers in an effective manner. The consequences have included decreased levels of service, increased costs and poor morale amongst staff. Many organisations have found that failure by outsource service providers has struck at the heart of their organisation's core purpose.
